The Arctic Circle crosses Iceland at its northern most point, on the island Grímsey which is a part of the town Akureyri. The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun remains constantly above or below the horizon for 24 hours (at the solstice in June and December).

The birdlife in Grimsey is unique with numerous different species and unusually dense populations. The birdlife is flourishing due to several reasons; rich fishing grounds are close by, no rats or mice are on the island and hunting of the birds and collection of their eggs has been reduced to a minimum since earlier times.

Golf at the Arctic Circle

A small (3 hole) golf course is located at the Arctic Circle, close by the airport. Golf Clubs and balls can be rented at the Básar Guesthouse located by the golf course.

Guided tours and sightseeing on the island

Guided walks are offered all year. The tour covers the history of the island, some of the birdlife and way of living in Grímsey and crosses the Arctic Circle. A diploma for crossing the Arctic Circle is included in the tour.

Midnight sun

Grímsey is 5.3 square kilometres and 5.5 kilometres long, it is comparatively flat, lowest on the West side by the harbour and village and highest on the East side rising up to about 105 meters above sea level. There are several different hiking trails/paths to choose from.
